Where the hustle and bustle of Connex stops at Belgrave is where Puffing Billy starts it’s scenic route to Gembrook. You can really leave the city behind and imagine being part of a time that was far more leisurely and slow paced.

Puffing Billy is a genuine historic steam train that still runs regularly on the original mountain track between Belgrave and Gembrook that is was built to serve at the turn of the century. The Railway itself is the sole survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900's. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Puffing Billy runs every day of the year, except Christmas day, and is a 24.5 km operating museum. You can just go along for the ride and enjoy the scenery and mountain air or book for a lunch or dinner experience.

Lakeside, the intermediate terminus of the railway is inside the beautiful Emerald Lake Park. You may stop over for a few pleasant hours bushwalking, swimming or just relaxing in the peaceful country setting. See the Fishing and Just for Fun sections for things to do at Emerald Park Lake.

The terminus of the line at Gembrook which is a lovely country village with shops and cafes. See the Driving section for more information on Gembrook.

For the big kids among us there is also the ‘Day out with Thomas’ where you can ride a train hauled by Thomas the Tank Engine himself. Look out for Dougal the Diesel as well!
